Apple granted patent on auto-censoring audio system

Apple has made a concerted effort and investment in beefing up its streaming services, Apple Music and Beats 1 Radio, from bringing in famous names to striking a deal to host unlicensed mixes and reproductions. The tech giant is clearly leaning heavily on streaming as a large part of its strategy going forward.

It’s no surprise then to see the company pursue patents related to streaming. Apple was recently granted a patent it filed in September of 2014 for a system that would automatically censor audio for explicit content. Dubbed “Management, Replacement and Removal of Explicit Lyrics during Audio Playback,” the system detects swearing and other forms of unwanted audio and replaces it with alternate recordings. The system is presumably for musical content, though the patent also makes mention of audio books and there is speculation that it could be applied to other forms of recorded content, such as podcasts.

It is also in line with Apple’s apparent commitment, despite some criticism, to keeping explicit content from its services, as Apple Music and Beats 1 both only play clean versions of tracks.
