K. Flay‘s vocal work provides producers with a unique color and texture to mold to their productions, as evidenced by her contribution Louis The Child’s “It’s Strange” and that track’s subsequent gargantuan remix package. Her recent single, “FML,” is now getting the remix treatment itself, the latest from the anonymous duo SMLE.
With K. Flay skewing to the alternative side of things herself, SMLE matches the original’s vibe and puts their own relaxed spin on it. Opening with a serene production, SMLE’s synths carry Flay’s vocals forward to the buildup where they hollow things out and leave her voice to reverberate across the reproduction. The drop itself makes clever work of blending synths with K.Flay samples into a single sound that provides sharp melodic leads while smoothed out chords inflate on the up-beat to give the mid tempo track lift and momentum.
Premiering exclusively on Dancing Astronaut, SMLE’s remix of “FML” is available below.
