Dancing Astronaut Presents 5 Under 5,000: Vol. 4

5 Under 5,000 is a feature on Dancing Astronaut dedicated to spotlighting talented upcoming artists. Every two weeks, we’ll highlight five artists from a variety of genres with under 5,000 followers on SoundCloud (at the time of writing).

Bastion is a French duo who are gearing up for the release of their debut EP, CRYSTAL. There must be something in the water over in France, because just about every producer from there has a uniquely creative production style.

“Twisted Love,” which features Bobby Saint’s quality falsetto vocals, is the first single from CRYSTAL, which will be released via the label Sexy Brut. The song has elements that could definitely be inspired by Daft Punk, though wrapped up in a clean, modern French-house flair. If the rest of the tracks are even close to this well-done, Bastion will definitely not be under 5,000 followers for very long.

On the indie electronica side of the musical spectrum, Midoca has a momentous and meaningful chillwave style. While his music is somber for the most part, Midoca manages to sound relaxed while having dark, well-founded bass and textures that provide a swirling mass of complex undertones.

His singing voice, though heavily affected with pitch correction and similar effects most of the time, is actually quite good, adding to the quality of his production. The track “Tell Me Your Lies,” like most of Midoca’s other tunes, has an eerie impression that encourages introspective thoughts. A steady, even downtempo rhythm keeps the track at almost marching pace, while the vocals provide amazing depth and clarity to the high end.

It just so happens that the next artist, AV.i, is also from Paris. Comparing Av.i to Bastion is a great way to see what was meant by French producers having their own unique production style.

Av.i’s most recent EP, The Strongest of the Strange, is filled with chilled out hip-hop beats that bring in a perfect amount of jazz elements. Groovy basslines and percussion provide support for the plethora of interesting samples that are used tastefully throughout much of the 5-track collection.

Garren Langford, or as he goes by in the music world, Garren, is a Chicago-based producer of mostly hip-hop. Garren started making a solid name for himself by producing big tracks like Chance the Rapper‘s track “Smoke Break,” off of the Coloring Book mixtape.

A couple of months ago, however, Garren turned to original music in the form of The Late Day Sessions EP. While the release contains hip-hop elements, it also blends diverse musical elements while standing firmly in the future bass realm.

Adding to the off-kilter themes that pervade this particular volume of 5 Under 5,000 is Tendencies  who comes in with an astoundingly polished funk house style. Prominent instrument, vocal, and percussion sampling give Tendencies’ sound a pronounced, old-school house feel.

The track “Filterhouse7″ does just as the title suggests, employing filters on much of the high-end. A quick, driving bassline repeats throughout almost the entirety of the song. The repetitiveness gives “Filterhouse7″ more of a classic house feel, though the bassline says otherwise, making it a track that could fit easily into a set from an artist like Justin Jay.
