Sunday Morning Medicine is a feature from Dancing Astronaut dedicated to the mellower side of electronic music. We bring you our favorite therapeutic selections — old and new — in an attempt to alleviate the agonizing effects of a long weekend of partying.
1. In a twist no one expected, Vol. 141 of Sunday Morning Medicine opens with a cover of Neil Young track “Hey Hey, My My” courtesy of the group Fjord. Hailing from Québec, Fjord maintains the spirit of their countryman’s original — a combination of smooth melancholy and a resolute, if subtle, optimism — while opting for a distinctively downtempo update. An 808 kit provides the track’s momentum, adding to it’s swaying ambiance.
2. Next up is “But Now A Warm Feel Is Running” from Parisian Fhin. Similar to the previous entry, Fhin’s track has a pervasive blueness to it, particularly during the track’s first section, as the producer takes his time setting the scene. The drop doesn’t completely abandon this mood, though the introduction of drums and gently rising chord patches add an appreciated dose of energy.
3. To avoid Vol. 141 getting bogged down in a overly gloomy mindset, the halfway mark features the latest from Ryan Hemsworth. Featuring vocalists Keaton Henson and Mitski, “Wait” is part of the Adult Swim Singles series. Hemsworth has always had his own style but this track marks a new direction him, skewing away from the dreamy trap vibes he has long preferred for a very indie feel.
4. Now for something completely different, a lively entry from the UK’s mtbrd. The samplesmith’s “Sparks” features a classic soft-to-loud construction. Saccharine vocal samples lead the way forward before accompanied by ebullient horn stabs. All the while, the producer makes subtle tweaks and alterations to his samples and keeps cheerful groove going throughout.
5. With the dog days of summer fast approaching, Birocratic provides a fitting ending for Vol. 141. Making his second appearance in Sunday Morning Medicine — the first with fellow New Jerseyan Flamingosis in Vol. 134 — “lullaby of the sea” represents significant growth for the producer. A wavy, synth-led intro leads into a wide open shuffle that seamlessly blends electronic elements and samples — of particular note are the tasty guitar licks and percussion selections. Head to the closest body of water and throw this track on before the calendar flips to another Monday.
