J.Phlip, Louis the Child, Le Youth and more share their favorite summer mixes ahead of What The Festival

90 miles east of Portland, in the pastoral setting of Wolf Run Ranch, What the Festival has been building a reputable name for itself in the North American festival landscape. Now coming into its 5th year with a lineup that includes the likes of Thievery Corporation, Bonobo, Claude VonStroke and more — not to mention Funktion-One sound on all its stages — WTF is gearing up for what looks to be its most promising edition yet.

Ahead of the festival, J.Phlip, Le Youth, Louis the Child, Jerry Folk, and M!NT have shared their favorite summertime mixes with us, with each artist providing commentary on their selection.

What The Festival takes place from June 17-20 at Wolf Run Ranch, Dufur, Oregon. Tickets are available here.

J.Phlip

Cottam – Causes Of Colour Mix

“I can’t remember how I found this mix, but I have kept it as a “go to” mix for the past 5 years!  He produces some really fun music too. SUNNY vibes of pitched down house with a tinge of disco. Such a SMOOTH mix, I’m a fan!”

Le Youth

Le Youth – Splash House Sessions #3

“This is my Splash House mix, I made it for the summer pool parties. It’s full of R&B/pop throwbacks and some of my own jams. It exemplifies everything my new label, Locals Only, is all about – good, sexy music. See you at the Pool Party stage!”

Louis The Child

Major Lazer – Robot Heart – Sunset Burning Man 2015

“This mix is full of feel good reggae that’s perfect for any summer vibe. The track selection is amazing, and Walshy Fire’s MCing keeps you singing along. Can’t go wrong.”

Jerry Folk

HNNY – Music For Listening Vol. 9

“I think one of my favorites mixes of all time is from HNNY’s “Music For Listening” series. A lot of his music is sample based, and I feel like in this mix series he brings out the root of what his music inspired by. I’ve honestly listened to this mix probably 40 times through the whole thing the past years. If u ever have anxiety, woken up after a rough night out or just need to find peace this mix will cure it, it does for me at least. Not what you would expect, but if you enjoy good music, trust me you will like this.”

M!NT

Mercy – SSMS#09

“This is one of my favorite mixes from the last year because of its diversity, and in my opinion is a perfect blend of different genres that showcases how diverse What The Festival musically is. Even though I don’t know Mercy personally, after first hearing this mix I felt like we value the relationship between electronic music and hip-hop in a similar way. The mix begins with some classic jams that remind me of the carefree summer hustle in Brooklyn & New York where I now live, and then switches right into an eclectic variety of dub of UK garage cuts, all with a slight R&B influence. To me the overall vibe of this mix encapsulates the feeling of summer and the nostalgia that comes with it that reminds you of those times spent with old friends on summer break when there are barely as many worries as adulthood. Mercy is definitely a selector and one of the more innovative and underrated producers coming up right now, don’t sleep on the kid.”
