Listen To Jackal’s Debut Diplo & Friends Mix [Interview]

Mikey Pennington, better known as the trap beast Jackal, has been on a relentless warpath over the last two years, captivating the dance world with his own brand of scintillating bass music.

The London native has fueled packed-out crowds at EDC Vegas, Coachella, Electric Forest, and more, and now he’s just released his debut mix on BBC Radio 1’s Diplo & Friends.

If you’ve missed the opportunity to catch a Jackal set, catch up on the insanity with the guest mix below. Featuring an abundance of destructive trap and chunky sound design, Jackal’s Diplo & Friends mix is without a doubt one of the gnarliest we’ve heard in a while. Snag it as a free download, and read on for the tracklist and Jackal’s thoughts on the mix.

“Being given an hour to play on BBC Radio 1 where I’m from in England is such a big deal, I’m so beyond stoked they gave me this opportunity. Anyway here’s a bunch of cool shit I’ve been playing in my sets recently and some brand new stuff from me, I hope u dig.” [sic]

You’re really close with your management team at Vital. How does having the right team behind you affect your success in this business?

“Being good friends with the whole business side of my team helps me be myself and truly express what I really want to and how i want to. If I’m coming up with ideas with my managers, we can casually shoot down bad ideas and joke around with it and no-one is offended about it you know? it’s definitely the environment I enjoy working in, I don’t have time to waste. friendship is underrated in business.”

2015 was a huge year for your career, are there any stories you’d like to share with your fans? How have you been approaching 2016?

“2015 was amazing but I still feel like I’ve barely gotten started with my career. I feel like this has all been practice for the next few years to come. the last half of this year is going to be really crazy, I’ve been quiet all year but working so hard.”

Can you describe your experience in America’s dance music scene versus what you grew up with in England?

“The scene is way more drunk and a lot less plur. England is way more about subtlety and what can be seen as ‘tasteful’. I like it, I just prefer the obnoxious american hip hop stuff.”

When you perform in front of a crowd, you’ve got that energy to feed off of, but what are you thinking when doing a radio mix like on Diplo & Friends?

“I actually made that mix whilst I was traveling between Paradiso festival and Electric Forest. I tried to recreate the energy in those sets as much as I could, those festivals we’re some of the best shows I’ve ever played, it’s all about trying to encapsulate those moments I had with the crowd into the mix.”

What are some of your favorite tracks in this mix, and what strikes you most about them?

“Some of the edits I’ve made really kill at the shows I’ve been playing lately, especially the dubstep and the Kanye ones. Also, i’m really stoked about the new tracks I’ve put in there, especially ‘Gunshot,’ I think the vocal really stands out. Cannot wait to release that track.”
