Perhaps more than any other event conglomerate, Live Nation has shrewdly capitalized on the booming music festival industry. In yet another strategic move by the enterprise, Live Nation Canada has acquired the festival portfolio of Union Events, a front-runner in Canada’s event production industry. This deal will see Live Nation inherit festivals such as Edmonton’s Sonic Boom, Calgary’s X-Fest, Chasing Summer, and more. Furthermore, this acquisition will see Union founders Harvey Cohen and Nhaelan McMillan join the Live Nation Canada team.
Live Nation’s purchase of Union Events is unsurprising, as it’s only the latest in a series of global expansions for the live entertainment monolith. Over the past few years, Live Nation claimed majority stakes in event production companies globally, such as Stockholm’s Stureplansgruppen Live and Texas’ C3 Presents.
2015 proved to be a rocky year for Union Events, following setbacks such as the weather-related cancellation of X-Fest and the company’s last minute decision to relocate the Safe In Sound festival. It will be interesting to note how the company develops under their new parent.
