Meet the underground talent of CRSSD Fest: Lane 8

San Diego’s CRSSD Fest – a joint-effort between Goldenvoice and FNGRS CRSSD — has become a sanctuary for house, techno, and underground electronic music fans. The upcoming March edition looks to be the festival’s most promising offering yet, featuring an even greater array of delectable underground acts as well as some formidable headliners such as ODESZA, Chet Faker, Gesaffelstein and Cirez D. To dig a big deeper into the lineup, we’ve tapped some of our favorite acts on the bill for a daily interview series before the festival.

Lane 8 has evolved from budding Anjunadeep talent to in-demand performer and producer. Recently, he’s become a prominent player on renowned Spanish imprint Suara, bringing his three-track Midnight EP to the label last month.

Where Lane 8 excels is his ability to marry memorable songwriting with club-savvy deep house compositions. It’s the kind of alluring formula that’s already won over everyone from Pete Tong to The Magician. On the live front, he’s just as polished, wielding diverse cuts that span the gamut from house to techno. Lane 8 performs from The Palms stage on Saturday.

Tickets for CRSSD Fest are available here.

How long have you been DJing for & how did you get your start?
I started DJ in college, so almost 10 years ago now – mostly just messing around with friends in the living room late at night. It was always just a fun side hobby until I started to get somewhere with my music, and then DJing became a much more serious part of my life.

What was your first label release? Would you still play it?
My first label release was “Be Mine” on Anjunadeep back in 2013 – I don’t play it so much anymore as the mixdown is a bit wonky and it doesn’t quite fit in with the vibe of my sets currently – but I think it accurately represents where I was at back then!

What has been the biggest breakthrough of your career?
Probably releasing my debut album last year – it was a moment when everything started to come together – working relationships with all the amazing collaborators, and also getting recognition of a body of work from fans – felt like I had really taken a step forward artistically!

If you could be another artist for a day, who would you pick?
I’d be James Murphy, spend the entire day writing amazing lyrics and then send them to myself to use.

What’s your opinion of the dance scene in the US right now?
There’s a lot of really exciting stuff happening within the US right now, I always really enjoy playing different festivals and clubs and the variety that each little mini-scene offers – it’s pretty tough to sum up the entire US scene as it’s so radically different from city to city!

How do you think the US scene will evolve over the next few years?
It seems that house and techno are making a surge in the states – as people inevitably tire of the mainstage EDM sound and move on. I see that as more of a glacial process rather than a sudden shift, but it seems to be taking course slowly but surely – which is a real blessing for those who operate within those scenes.

What are you most looking forward to about CRSSD Fest?
Playing nice music in the warm sun – it’s cold in Europe right now!

If you could recommend three artists to catch from the lineup, who would you pick?
Cirez D, Tycho and Odesza
