“I’m not concerned with making music that fits a certain method or brand or genre,” says Denver producer Brennen Bryarly, better known to the dance world as option4. Between releases on Nurvous, a huge new project with MANIK aptly titled 909 Til Infinity, and throwing some of the best house and techno parties in Denver, it’s fair to say that option4 knows a thing or two about what works in the club.
“I think I’ll always make club tunes, but sometimes I don’t feel like club music,” he says. “Sometimes I feel down or low like any other human being. I wrote this track during one of those times and it made me feel better.”
Bryarly’s new track is “Love Is Lonely,” arriving on Kitsuné as a free download. Soothing the ears with melodic synth rolls and syrupy vocal chops, Bryarly enlists the talents of Denver indie group Rose Quartz for the introspective production that trades peak-time booty movement for sensual end-of-night decision-making. The track tenderly builds atmosphere before wispy vocals take center-stage and lead the listener on a heart-tugging journey through melancholia and longing. It’s a personal track with an intimate touch — the vocals were recorded in an all-analogue studio, while the reverb was made using an actual eight-foot reverb steel plate. Although love can be lonely at times, turning up tracks like these is a beautiful reminder that sometimes that’s OK.
