Today, the veteran DJ and producer DJ Shadow released his latest album, The Mountain Will Fall, his first full-length album since starting his own imprint, Liquid Amber. The 12-track collection, which has certain stylings similar to the tracks he and G Jones released as Nite School Klik, showcases his eclectic and evolving production style by slaloming in and out of trip hop and a variety of other sounds – most of which can’t be pigeonholed into any one genre.
Airy, effervescent sound design transforms into an old school hip-hop sound, which he leaves behind as quickly as it was brought on. By the time the first track is over, he is already leading the listener down a rugged path between genres that somehow manages to keep clean, consistent production quality amidst an unrelenting rush of creative chaos.
With over 60,000 records in his collection, picking and choosing samples seems to be daunting. It is no easy task to sift through thousands of samples and modify them in such a way that follows a singular theme, and in that regard, it’s easy to see why DJ Shadow is one of the best samplers in the industry.
Backed up by a smooth and well-balanced sub, one can only guess which techniques DJ Shadow applies throughout The Mountain Will Fall. Marking yet another creative statement added to his large repertoire, The Mountain Will Fall continues the legacy of an already established legend, offering nearly a full hour of true sound artistry.
