Tom Trago blends old and new for his debut Essential Mix

Above all, Tom Trago plays music that people want to dance to. The Dutch DJ blends classic house rhythms with influences from disco, Detroit techno, and funk to conceive an unmistakably moveable sound.

Stepping up to the plate this week to make his BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix debut, Trago opted to take listeners on a journey through dance music history, commenting:

“I’m very psyched to present my first Essential Mix. I incorporated a variety of dance tracks to make it an enjoyable mix to listen to in your living room, or your car, or to rock your afterparty. Enjoy the ride!”

Doing his due diligence to highlight some of dance music’s finest tunes, Trago opened with the mystifying “Epilogue” by James Pants before sliding into a throwback from none other than the legendary Moodymann. Also featured in the mix are unreleased tracks from Trago himself, in addition to a combination of eclectic late 1990′s hits from Bruce Springsteen and The Mole People. Perhaps most notable, however, is Trago’s closing track selection, the perpetual frenetic groove of James T. Cotton’s “On Time” proving the perfect ending to a rather retro collection.

Stream Tom Trago’s Essential Mix on BBC Radio 1.
