[TSS Premiere] The Legendary David Starfire Unleashes “Taphon”
It’s rare these days to stumble upon a musical piece that is truly unique. But this premiere we have for you tonight goes against that grain, and we are so thankful.
The legendary David Starfire is putting out his fifth album, Karuna, tomorrow. Recognized by BBC Radio as “One of the most brilliant world-fusion producers of our time,” Los Angeles-based electronic music producer has shared his dubstep track “Taphon” for us, ahead of the official album release tomorrow.
While Starfire’s style may be hard to pinpoint, “Taphon” is an experimental bass track, with hints of dubstep, glitch and downtempo elements. He enlisted help from Oriel Poole for vocals, while the xylophone and percussion was done by Len Pong. The result of their collaboration is a trippy and spiritual audio journey lead by a funky melody and wompy bassline.
Karuna in its entirety is great – and we highly recommend listening and purchasing it tomorrow when it’s out. The artists featured on the album are Burmese refugee musicians, which he worked with while visiting refugee border zones in Northern Thailand during a time of political unrest in 2015. All the album’s proceeds go directly to the Thai Freedom House – a non-profit organization located in Chiang Mai devoted to educating Burmese refugees through language, arts and academic programs.
Also, if you’re based in LA – join Starfire in celebration of his album at his release party. The party will be at Santa Monica’s Zanzibar on Wednesday, March 2nd 2016. Hosted by The Luminous Movement, the evening will feature sets from Rhythmstar, Imagika Om and Electric Dandelion. RSVP to David Starfire’s Los Angeles Karuna Album Release Party here.
