David Guetta has evolved as an artist numerous times over the course of his lengthy career. Guetta’s music, like that of any artist who has been active for more than a decade, progressed through several distinct stylistic stages before landing upon the pop-based house that launched him to superstardom in the early ’10s. As with any tenured public figure’s career, Guetta has met his share of controversies and criticisms over the years.
Lately, Guetta has expertly managed to streamline his style and his negative feedback into one synergistic avenue, by adopting a modus operandi of blatantly plagiarizing other artists’ successful tracks. Most recently, Guetta angered fans by releasing “This One’s For You,” a song that would be deemed suspiciously similar to Major Lazer and DJ Snake’s “Lean On” if Guetta had left any room for suspicion in his unabashed appropriation.
For his newest release, David Guetta has teamed up with Showtek for an impressively shameless ripoff of Gesaffelstein’s “Pursuit.” Released as part of the Skinkalation Vol. 2 EP (a five-track compilation for Showtek’s SKINK label), “The Death of EDM” sees two of EDM’s biggest acts try their hands at techno. Practically a carbon copy of “Pursuit” in its structure, synth-work, and percussion, “The Death of EDM” is a formidable piece of evidence showing that Gesaffelstein’s style can be imitated, but never duplicated.
It is important to note that Guetta and Showtek did show a degree of ingenuity by enlisting British vocalist Beardyman to provide a campy vocal line redolent of the “Cha Cha Slide” – a missing component that Gesaffelstein surprisingly didn’t think to include in the lead single of Aleph.
Though EDM hasn’t yet died, ideally, this “Guettaffelstein” phase will.
