Does David Guetta’s latest track rip off Major Lazer and DJ Snake’s ‘Lean On’?

David Guetta was recently tapped to provide the official song for EURO 2016, the soccer (football) championship held every four years to determine the sport’s top European nation. His contribution, “This One’s For You,” is a vast departure from the French producer’s normal style, and has led DJ Snake and Diplo to call it a rip off of their collaborative platinum smash, “Lean On,” which set the mark for most streamed song on Spotify.

In a series of since-deleted tweets, Snake and Diplo, who produced the track with his cohorts in Major Lazer, went after Guetta for allegedly copying their collaboration.

As for whether or not the track is a ripoff, it’s impossible to deny the similarities. Rounded off chords that are a combination of pluck and percussive elements lead off both tracks. What’s more, they both feature the rolling moombahton beat and tempo — an obvious departure from the various house genres that Guetta has built his career on.

Both drops also feature a chopped, vocal sample that slides up and down over the beat. Using them in that way isn’t necessarily damning evidence — Cashmere Cat comes to mind as a producer who has long used that trick in his tracks, though Snake and Major Lazer eschewed the Norwegian’s generous reverb for a more buzzy, nasal sound. Guetta did not.

Obviously, Guetta’s track does have numerous differences; namely copious snare rolls, large piano stabs, and, presumably to keep with the soccer vibe, what sounds like sampled stadium crowd noise.  On a comprehensive level, though, the similarities in structure and compositional choices are too large to overlook. Snake and Diplo have a clear case to justify their anger.

Both tracks are available in this post for comparison.
