Guy Gerber’s RUMORS party successfully debuts in Los Angeles [Review]

Something special happened on Saturday evening in Los Angeles: Chinatown’s historic Gin Ling Way played host to its first ever electronic event, Guy Gerber’s RUMORS party.

Transported from the idyllic shores of Ibiza, Gerber’s iconic party brought the Balearic island aesthetic to Downtown Los Angeles for an extended performance from the Israeli veteran alongside LA legend DJ Harvey.

Walking into the pedestrianized plaza at sunset was a surreal sight. Local shops and restaurants lined the sides with partygoers dressed in Asian-inspired apparel and colorful summer attire merrymaking in the center square. All the while, dragon figures danced on stilts while joyous fans shot celebratory poppers into the air.

The festive atmosphere was perfectly complemented by DJ Harvey’s opening set: a medley of disco and deep house that kept spirits jovial while slowly building up the energy for Gerber. The Los Angeles resident reminded us just why the city adores him so much: his flair and technicality behind the decks is simply infectious.

With the sun fully set, Gerber took the decks around 9pm for his 3-hour headlining stint. With the night at his disposal and the packed crowd in a mirthful mood, Guy delivered the perfect evening set. Lighter than his peaktime offerings but upbeat enough to keep the groove, Gerber’s performance proved a fitting soundtrack for the beautiful outdoor venue. Though never diverging too far from his tech house constraints, Gerber appeared in unique form, providing a seamless experience that could have easily carried on for hours after the party ended.

Ultimately, Saturday night marked both the successful debut of RUMORS in Los Angeles, and the successful transformation of Gin Ling Way into an outdoor dance party. The theme was on point, the attendance was lively but not oversaturated, and the plaza itself may have proved our favorite new dance venue in Los Angeles. Here’s to hoping other parties adopt the historic space in the future.
