Massive Attack – Paradise Circus (Mija Remix)

OWSLA‘s genre-bending DJ and producer Mija decided to have her shot at taking on the immensely popular “Paradise Circus” by legendary British act Massive Attack. The original track was released by the group back in 2010 as part of their fifth studio album Heligoland. Like most of their music, it became popular for good reason: it’s simply an incredible song.

With that in mind, the fact remains that it lends itself very well to being remixed, which was first done by Zeds Dead the same year the original was released. It would be a stretch to say that Mija’s new version was not inspired by the earlier remix, at least in regards to the pitch-enveloping bass that serves as the focal point of the drop — a hallmark of Zeds Deads’ bass design from the period. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing either, as electronic music is built largely on the re-imagination of previous works. There are those who may not agree, but it’s a great thing in the case of Mija’s remix of “Paradise Circus,” because it’s as if she’s giving a nod to them and their version, making it known she’s not trying to overshadow it.

Moving away from the similarities, Mija hasn’t sampled the original as is. Rather, she’s opted to raise the pitch such that the vocals are high enough to be almost unrecognizable in the verses. Interestingly, this has the effect of pitching the piano back up from the original, close to its normal register and completely changing the overall feeling. With this track, Mija has ultimately done the original justice, while staying distinct enough from the Zeds Dead version to warrant another go-around in festival sets.
