Meet the underground talent of CRSSD Fest: Colour Vision

San Diego’s CRSSD Fest – presented by FNGRS CRSSD — has become a sanctuary for underground electronic music fans. The upcoming March edition looks to be the festival’s most promising offering yet, featuring an even greater array of delectable house and techno acts as well as some formidable headliners such as ODESZA, Chet Faker, Gesaffelstein and Cirez D. To dig a big deeper into the lineup, we’ve tapped some of our favorite acts on the bill for a daily interview series before the festival.

Adding his own tangy mixture of deep, disco, and tropical house to the honeyed vibes that will abound at Waterfront Park this weekend is local talent Colour Vision. Just as his name suggests, his production and mixing provide a myriad of colors that go far beyond the usual tropical house sound.

Years of playing poolside with a steady supply of mojitos and lava flows have apparently paid off for the young DJ, as he recently went on his first headlining tour through Australia, and is under the same management as other up-and-comers, including Australian duo Carmada, who played at CRSSD last spring. Alongside being a tastemaker with his own music, he started a music site, Paradise Ultd., where he still regularly contributes.

Tickets for CRSSD Fest are available here.

How long have you been DJing for & how did you get your start?

I’ve been DJing for a little over 7 years and got my start DJing indie dance parties that i put together with friends. I created a blog to try and cultivate a scene around the new music i was in love with and interviewed a local DJ named Andrew Decade who booked me for my first club event when i was 21 opening for YELLE at the Beauty Bar in San Diego and never looked back.

What was your first label release? Would you still play it?

My first label release was a bootleg compilation of indie pop songs that i remixed in a nudisco/moombahton fashion via Salon Acapulco’s label “MIX LE FUN” that was followed by my first original single ‘SUR CHIC’. I definitely have been playing out the original & Rambo V remix in my club sets and always go to the compilation during summer pool parties!

What has been the biggest breakthrough of your career?

The biggest breakthrough came last year when i was picked up by my current management at Audiopaxx in Sydney, Australia who have helped me take the ‘Colour Vision’ project to the next level and organized my first Aussie Headline tour in November of last year including a set at the Your Paradise Festival in Fiji which was a tropical dream come true.

If you could be another artist for a day, who would you pick?

I would definitely love to be Todd Terje for a day to raid his library of obscure tunes and perform his live act which is one of my favorite things.. EVER

What’s your opinion of the dance scene in the US right now?
I think the US dance scene is in disarray right now blending the lines of commercial pop and underground music trends a little too closely.. but it’s been my experience that when things seem darkest that something new and exciting quickly follows and i’ve personally been finding some amazing new music and have been loving the crowds so far in 2016!

How do you think the US scene will evolve over the next few years?

It’s hard to say but i’m hoping to see a larger emphasis on live electronic artists and promoters willing to take risks on new sounds and genres that haven’t been invented yet.

What are you most looking forward to about CRSSD Fest?

I’m most looking forward to my set at CRSSD and i am incredibly stoked to be representing not only my hometown but the Paradise Ultd. family of artists at one of the most hyped events on the west coast… and of course i’m excited to have an all access pass which i will use to fanboy over all of talented artists i get to share the bill with.

If you could recommend three artists to catch from the lineup, who would you pick?

My hit list includes Odesza, Cassian & Bondax!
