One of the most interesting things about future bass is its ability to graft onto different sounds and styles while maintaining its own character. “Flutter,” a new single from German producer Virtual Riot and singer Madi, is a prime example. It takes a future bass framework and weaves in elements of bass house, vocal pop, and dubstep throughout, while still being resolutely future bass. Virtual Riot does a nice job of keeping the energy high with a more driving drum beat than is typically heard in the genre, but manages to keeps things consistently interesting with syncopated bass stabs, snappy percussion, and crunchy sound design, all while Madi belts out instant-earworm top lines. The up-and-comer also has a good ear for space in his mix, and the song is full and dynamic from start to finish.
Virtual Riot’s “Flutter” is out on Moving Castle now.
