Whereisalex – Internet Theory, Part One [EP Review]

Few things in music are more exciting than the emergence of talented, boundary-pushing young artists with a fully articulated voice already formed. One such talent currently gaining notoriety is producer/visual artist Whereisalex, who has been amassing a SoundCloud presence on the strength of a series of quirky, arresting bootlegs and original singles. The forward-thinking up-and-comer has his first EP, Internet Theory, Part One. The EP, which is composed of five individual songs mixed together into a 15 minute tape, is a fresh, vibrant, assertively innovative release filled with surprises and flashes of virtuosity.

Whereisalex blends a broad range of different styles and tones throughout the five track odyssey, but manages remarkably well to keep the project a cohesive, logical unit, wherein each song can be taken on its own, but together are far greater as the sum of their parts. From the offbeat funkiness of “A Digital Love,” to the thunderous bass of “My Name is Alex,” to the rapid-fire drum fills of “Eight,” Whereisalex’s Internet Theory blends jazz, future bass, and experimental electronica into a stunning and fascinatingly different debut; let’s hope he’s only getting started.
